That look in your eyes

What can I say?

The beauty and grace

As you wander off

Looking back over your shoulder

That look again

Almost out of sight

I wave

You don’t, you can’t

I think of all the good times

The love shared

The fun

A closeness never shaken

The trust between us

Even when stepping into the unknown

You answer my calls and demands

With only the occasional

Questioning look

When I am gone

Patiently you wait

You treat every return

As if we have been apart for an age

The affection you show

And love you emit

Is from deep within

I come back to the here and now

I realise you are by my side

That look again

Yes of course I love you too …

My dear Border Collie

This was written after a conversation of times when I was young and going around the hills with my cousin, who was a shepherd. I was amazed at the intelligence of the dogs and even had one that was classed as mine. His name was Bob and he was the oldest and most experienced dog.
